IMG_2155.JPG - This is a pioneer odometer. It was attached to a wagon. There was a projecting pin on the wagon wheel that moved the lower rod one position for each turn of the wagon wheel. The worm gear slowly turned the back 60-toothed gear. One complete revolution of the 60-toothed gear represented 1 mile (360 turns of the wagon's wheel). The each tooth on the front 40-toothed gear represented 1/4 mile so one complete revolution of the 40 toothed gear measured 10 miles.
